In honor of the NBA playoffs, I figured this is a perfect time to rant about the loss of our basketball team. I know that I’m not the only one out there that feels sick while watching the ex-Supersonics having so much success in this year’s playoffs. Clay Bennett and the Joklahoma City Thunder don’t deserve to be enjoying professional basketball, let alone quality basketball. Whether you’re passionate about baseball, football, or even hockey, Seattle sport fans care about their teams. NBA games are a way to bring people together who have a common interest. Many local, lifelong dedicated fans who anticipate the upcoming NBA season are left with an empty feeling. Their Supersonics had been stolen from them. In the fall of 1967, the Pacific Northwest was granted its first professional sports team; the Supersonics. Although the Sonics did struggle on the court in their first season, the city instantly fell in love with the young expansion team. In just eight seasons the team made its first playoff appearance; lead by legendary point guard Slick Watts. The success on the court was leading to a huge fan base. Washington natives couldn’t get enough of the green and gold. The 1979 Seattle Supersonics are still the only professional team to win a title in the city of Seattle. (Other than the Storm, woo?) Prior to their championship season, Pacific Northwest sports were relatively unknown. Although the Supersonics are gone from Seattle, they are far from forgotten. The Sonics weren’t just a basketball team, they were our squad. They gave the city a sense of pride, allowed fathers and sons a chance to bond, and were hero’s in the community. After forty-one years of entertainment, the Sonics will always be important to Seattle. If the Supersonics never return to Seattle, at least we have our memories. I’ll end this post with a documentary that everyone should defiantly take the time to check out. Be easy blog world.
